The start of a new year feels full of fresh opportunities and hopes! Many people take this time to evaluate their lives and set new goals for the year ahead.
Approaching the year prayerfully can help align our goals with God’s will and invite His guidance into every aspect of our lives. These New Year Prayer Points can be a great way to dedicate this year to the Lord.
Begin the year by praying the prayer points on your own during quiet time. Or, come together to pray as a family, a group of friends, a Bible study, or a church.
Below are prayer points to inspire and guide your time with the Lord as you step into the new year. Don’t miss the link to the free printable prayer points at the end of this article!
10 Powerful New Year Prayer Points
As you read and pray through these prayer points, reflect on the scripture for each prayer point.
We’ll also include a sample prayer which won’t be included on the New Year Prayer Points printable. These sample prayers can be helpful as a starting point if you are leading a prayer meeting or devotions, and aren’t used to praying out loud or in front of groups.
These prayer points can also be used at other times of year, when you desire a fresh start or are starting a new season in your life. With the downloadable New Year Prayer Points prayer sheet, we’ll also include a “New Beginnings” prayer sheet that has no references to the New Year.
While the prayer points might not cover each aspect of life, it’s a great starting point for praying for the New Year or new beginnings, even a new month!
Commit Your Plans to God
“Commit your deeds to the Lord, and your plans shall succeed.” — Proverbs 16:3
Pray that you will commit your goals, dreams, and plans to the Lord. Ask for help in trusting the Lord with the outcome.
Prayer: Dear Lord,
Thank You for this past year, and the work You have done in it. We pray for Your will for this coming year, that our plans would please You and our service would glorify You.
Please bless the work of our hands.
In the Name of Jesus, Amen.
Seek Wisdom for Decisions
“But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” — James 1:5
Ask God for wisdom to make choices that honor Him. Pray that you will make decisions from God’s wisdom and not your own.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father,
In all that we do, we want to surrender our hearts to you.
That includes our decisions, whether we are trying to figure out how to handle a problem or deciding if we should start something new. Remind us to seek Your perfect wisdom as we make choices in the New Year.
In the beautiful name of Jesus, Amen.
Pray for Renewal and Transformation
“Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.” — Romans 12:2
Pray for God’s renewal of your mind this year, and that He would strengthen you to not conform to this world. Ask Him to help you serve Him according to His perfect will.
Prayer: Dear Lord,
We do not want to be conformed to this world. Let us be transformed by You!
We pray that we would read Your Word often and let it renew our mind. We pray that we would have the wisdom to avoid the things that have influence over us to conform us to this world.
We ask these things in the precious name of Jesus, Amen.
Pray for Strength to Overcome Challenges
“I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.” — Philippians 4:13
Ask God to help you have strength each day to do His will, whether it is a day full of blessings, or a day filled with challenges. Pray to rely on the power of Jesus Christ, and not yourself.
Prayer: Dear God,
No matter what the day brings, we want to do Your will.
We pray that we will seek after You for our strength, and not ourselves. We pray that we wouldn’t seek strength or wisdom from the world, but that we would find these things in You.
Thank You for the strength You give us each day,
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Ask for a Clean Heart and Right Spirit
“Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me.” — Psalm 51:10
Pray that you would seek after righteousness and walk by the Holy Spirit. Thank God for the forgiveness available to those who believe in Him.
Prayer: O Lord,
We thank You for Your new mercies we receive every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). Great is Your faithfulness!
Please help us to seek after righteousness and to walk closely with You in the days and months ahead. Help us to live by the power of the Holy Spirit each day.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Pray for God’s Provision
“My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:19
Ask the Lord to help you trust Him to provide all your needs in the year ahead. Pray for His provision in His perfect timing.
Prayer: Dear Father,
We trust You to provide for us in the year ahead, no matter what it will bring. Help us to persevere when we need to wait for Your provision.
May we be good stewards of what You have provided for us, and may we be thankful.
In the name of Jesus, Amen.
Intercede for Family and Friends
“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” — Galatians 6:2
Pray that the Lord would help you take your eyes off only your needs, and that you would look to love and serve others. Intercede on the behalf of those who do not know Him yet, that they would come to know Him personally this year.
Prayer: O Lord,
You know those people who we have on our hearts right now. Some of them are facing a big need. Some of them may be living a life that doesn’t honor You. Others may not have ever had a personal relationship with You.
We pray that they would see You working in their lives right now. Soften their hearts that they would be open to You. May those facing challenges right now be strengthened, and see Your provision.
Help me to be part of reflecting Your love to others through kindness and service this year.
In the name of Jesus, Amen.
Pray for Faith to Trust God’s Timing
“Wait for the LORD. Be strong, and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for the LORD.” — Psalm 27:14
Ask God to strengthen your faith as you wait for Him. Pray that He would give you patience. Ask that He would help you wait with peace and gratitude.
Prayer: O Lord,
We often struggle because we want things when we want them. But if we are living according to Your plan, we may have to wait for Your perfect timing for many things.
Please bless us with an eternal perspective, that we would set our minds on things above. (Colossians 3:2) Help us to wait patiently for You, whether we are waiting on an answer or a need. Strengthen our faith as we wait.
In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
Pray for Opportunities to Serve Others
“As each has received a gift, employ it in serving one another, as good managers of the grace of God in its various forms.” — 1 Peter 4:10
Pray that the Lord would help you identify your gifts and talents, and that you would use them to serve others.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for all the gifts and talents we see in the body of Christ. Whether it is a gift that everyone can see or a quieter gift that can go unnoticed, we are blessed when people use their gifts.
Please show us how we can use our gifts this year to bless others. May our service glorify You and reflect Your love to others.
In the name of Jesus, Amen.
Thank God for His Faithfulness
“It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his mercies don’t fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.” — Lamentations 3:22-23
Thank God for His beautiful and generous mercy on us. Ask Him to help you see His faithfulness and be grateful, that we would never take Him for granted.
Prayer: Dear Lord,
Thank You for Your unending faithfulness. We would be consumed without Your mercy and kindness on our souls.
Help us to live faithful lives to You this year! May we live in gratitude for all You have done and all You will do.
